The best kids birthday parties in Tampa don't always happen at a venue. More families are hosting at home: no driving a carload of kids across town, no strict time slots, and the birthday girl gets to celebrate where she feels most comfortable.

The catch is the planning. Here are 15 at-home party ideas that actually work in Tampa Bay, plus a few Florida tips we've learned from more than 1,000 parties.

1. A mobile spa party in your driveway

A party that rolls up to your house does all the work for you. Our spa bus, Gem, parks in your driveway with glam stations, karaoke, a photo booth and a runway. Hosts run every minute, and kids ages 4–14 get mini manis, glitter makeup and a fashion show. Boys and mixed groups are welcome too. See party packages.

2. Backyard movie night

Hang a white sheet, rent or borrow a projector and lay out blankets and pillows. Hand out popcorn in paper bags with each guest's name. Start after sunset in summer, when it finally cools down.

3. Glow party

Glow sticks, neon face paint and a black light turn any garage or patio into a dance floor. It works best for ages 7 and up, after dark.

4. Slime and craft party

Set up a table with slime supplies, charms and take-home jars. For less mess, book a slime bar or DIY crafts as an add-on and let someone else clean up the glitter.

5. Mad scientist party

Baking-soda volcanoes, color-changing milk and homemade bouncy balls. Hand out lab goggles as favors.

6. Backyard camp-out

Pitch a tent, roast marshmallows (or microwave s'mores) and tell spooky-but-not-too-spooky stories. Best for ages 8–12.

7. Water day

In a Tampa summer, water wins. Sprinklers, a slip-and-slide, water balloons and a cooler of ice pops are all you need. Ask parents to send kids in swimsuits.

8. Karaoke and dance-off

A speaker, a microphone and a playlist of the birthday girl's favorite songs. Add a "judges' table" for the grown-ups.

9. Cupcake decorating

Bake plain cupcakes ahead and set out frosting, sprinkles and candy toppings. Every guest leaves with a box of their own creations.

10. Scavenger hunt

Hide clues around the yard that lead to a treasure (the cake, or goodie bags). Make picture clues for kids who can't read yet.

11. Runway fashion show

Pile up dress-up clothes, sunglasses and accessories, roll out a "red carpet" and cheer every walk. Film it for the birthday girl to keep.

12. Game show party

Run your own version of a TV game show with trivia about the birthday girl. Hand out prizes for every round.

13. Paint party

Small canvases, washable paint and smocks (old T-shirts work). Hang the finished art to dry like a gallery.

14. Field day

Sack races, egg-and-spoon races, tug-of-war and a ribbon for everyone. Great for big groups and mixed ages.

15. Pajama brunch

A morning party with pancakes, a toppings bar and a cartoon marathon. It beats the afternoon heat and fits busy weekends.

Tampa tips for an at-home party

  • Plan around the weather. From June to September, afternoon storms roll in almost daily. Host in the morning, or have a covered or air-conditioned backup.

  • Check parking and HOA rules. If anything big is coming to your house, like a bounce house or a party bus, check driveway space and community rules first. Our bus needs about 3 car lengths of flat parking.

  • Send invitations 3–4 weeks out. Earlier gets forgotten; later means scrambling for RSVPs.

  • Keep it to 1.5–2 hours. Kids are happiest with a short, full party.

  • Collect allergy info early. Ask on the invitation, or use a waiver form that collects it for you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a kids birthday party cost in Tampa? It depends on the guest count and how much you do yourself. A DIY party can be inexpensive. A party that comes to you with hosts and activities included, like ours, starts at $399.

What is the easiest at-home party to host? One where someone else runs the activities. That way you get to watch the fun instead of running it.

How many kids should I invite? A common rule is the child's age plus one. For a party on our bus, up to 12 guests fit at once.
